Part 1

We begin with the Greek crisis that has rattled global financial markets following the surprise announcement by the Greek Prime Minister of a referendum on a second bailout to contain the country’s crippling debt. Costa Panayatokis, professor of sociology at the City University of New York joins us to explain why this bombshell was dropped and whether it will lead to the very disorderly default that the European leaders has just made an agreement with the Greek government to avoid. Then we discuss the piles of money being thrown at the members of the Congressional super committee by the defense industries who are trying to avoid across the board cuts to the bloated defense budget. Mary Boyle, the Vice President of Communications at the campaign finance watchdog group Common Cause joins us to describe how the super committee has become a magnet for money, with lobbyists flocking to it like moths to a flame.
